Andrea Navratil Folk Quintet:
Daram, daram, madaram…

Birds are considered by many to be the highest aesthetic form of expression in poetry, and their songs have inspired countless composers. Indeed, the ancients saw these often flamboyant winged creatures as the source of inspiration for a wide range of folk songs. It is no coincidence that the Andrea Navratil Folk Quintet has chosen this theme for this special concert, which will take place in Müpa Budapest's Glass Hall on the official Hungarian Birds and Trees Day. The evening will feature song cycles based on Hungarian and Bulgarian folk songs dressed in contemporary, classical and jazz music 'feathers', as well as excerpts of verse from Hungarian poets, providing a true collection of bird-related musical delights.

The Andrea Navratil Folk Quintet - aka Navia - have worked on the material for this evening with two Hungarian composers and musicians, Dániel Csengery and Szabolcs Mátyássy, with whom they regularly collaborate. Together, their intention and hope is to use the multifaceted tools of today's contemporary and classical musical world to place a new spotlight on the beauty of original folk songs. Their songs will be performed by the Navia quintet, which contains two soloists who are both extraordinarily talented, but who have made their names in very different genres: the folk singer Andrea Navratil (a solo singer for the Kobzos Ensemble, Fonó Folk Band and the Duna Art Ensemble, and a special guest singer in the shows of András Berecz), and the pianist Zsuzsanna Grósz. The quintet is completed by Péter Bede, Csaba Gyulai and Gyula Lázár, three Hungarian musicians who have performed in a wide array of different groups (classical music, folk music, world music, early music). Together, they will take the audience on a journey from the Carpathian Basin to Bulgaria on the wings of the birds so often featured in folk songs. Beyond the migration of birds, these two distant locations are also connected by love. Love, which moves all people: that brings joy to the face, tears to the eyes, a smile to the lips, a twinkle to a glance and profundity to the heart.
