Jenő Lisztes Cimbalom Project feat. Biréli Lagrène

What Jenő Lisztes, who took up the cimbalom at the age of four and has since gone on to perform with various bands and orchestras at the world's top concert halls, plays with his own trio, the Jenő Lisztes Cimbalom Project, is essentially improvisational jazz.  more

For his part, the multiple award-winning guitarist Biréli Lagrène, a virtuoso of French Gypsy jazz and perhaps the most worthy heir to the legacy of Django Reinhardt, is one of the greats of django jazz. The two musicians played together for the first time in 2009, at a django festival in Lyon, but this will be our first chance to see them share a stage in Hungary.

Since 2006, Jenő Lisztes has played in the band of the internationally renowned Roby Lakatos, with whom he has performed in the world's most famous concert halls, from Carnegie Hall to the Musikverein. His cimbalom playing can also be heard in the film Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows, on which he collaborated with the world-famous film composer Hans Zimmer. In addition, he is a regular guest artist of the Budapest Festival Orchestra, led by Iván Fischer. Biréli Lagrène is a key figure in the world of French jazz guitarists, and of the django jazz style in particular, so much so that nothing indicates his rank better than the fact that he was able to play with Django Reinhardt's former musical partner, violinist Stéphane Grappelli. He has displayed his talent alongside Al Di Meola, Paco de Lucía and John McLaughlin as well. And, of course, he has also crossed paths with Lisztes, who says, "I've been listening to his music and following his career since I was eleven years old. Life brought us together for the first time at a django festival in Lyon in 2009, where he really liked the cimbalom in the django music. Then a few years later we played together in Germany too. While his playing also contains the past of gypsy music, he also aims for a more modern sound, so it is not only django music you can play with him, but practically everything.” And joining this outstanding French guitarist on stage in Hungary for the first time will be the Lisztes Cimbalom Project, comprising double bassist György Orbán and drummer Dániel Serei as well.

“I really enjoy writing it, although I break the rules of the stage very often. Comedy with three female and six male characters, four acts, a landscape (view of the lake); lot of conversations about literature, barely any action, five poods of love” – wrote Chekhov in one of his letters about The Seagull.
