Milos Forman’s film was a huge success in its day. Even without the eight Oscars. If artistic achievement were measured in awards alone, we’d be in trouble.

It was turned into a drama four centuries ago by Tirso de Molina and has since been adapted by dozens of notable authors from Molière to Pushkin, but it was as Don Giovanni that he became the irrepressible playboy we know today – thanks to the Mozart opera.

Carlos Saura is not strictly an ‘opera director’, but he did direct Carmen in 1983. In a flamenco style. That’s only right, Saura knows everything there is to know about flamenco. (He is also a natural when it comes to tango.)
