Andrew Lloyd Webber sikerdarabjának színpadra állítási jogát Szirtes Tamás és a Madách Színház még 1982-ben kapta meg, így Budapesten közvetlenül a londoni premier után láthatta a magyar közönség az akkori színházi világ egyik legnagyobb szenzációját, előbb, mint a New York-i publikum.
A darab a magyar színházi életben egyedülálló módon, hamarosan 40 éve van műsoron. Premierje óta minden hazai színházi rekordot megdöntött.
